This morning at Tall Cypress I had the pleasure of meeting 'Alan', a 4th grader in Nick Decesare's class at Margate Elementary School. Nick birds regularly at Tall Cypress and he has started up a birdwatching club at Margate Elementary.

Alan, with his little plastic binoculars and birding notebook, spent a half-hour or so birding with the 5 other birders who were there, peppering us with a continuous sream of questions about his 'target' birds and where he could go to see them. He especially wanted to see raptors (of course), which he ultimately got several of (along with an extended discussion about a certain juvenile hawk from a prior post).
From our numerous encounters, I always had the impression that Nick must be a great teacher, and after meeting Alan this morning there can be no doubt! So, kudos to you Nick (I hope you're reading this).
I've always been impressed by the number of educators (current and former) that I meet birding. I've always assumed that they enjoy birding due to their inquisitive minds; my wife (a Grade 7 Science teacher), on the other hand, says it's because they crave the peace and quiet. ;-)
Anyway, a big 'thank you' to teachers everywhere and especially those TAS members who have been (and continue to be) my teachers.
