I visited the C357 sparrow fields this morning and was surprised to see that a canal is being constructed on the south side of SW 168 Street, about 100 feet into the fields from the road. The fill is being dumped on the hill in the northwest section of the fields; a dirt road has been constructed to this area. Does anyone know why this canal is being constructed?

The only sparrow I found in the fields was an adult Chipping Sparrow. Raptors were conspicuous, in particular Northern Harrier. Also seen were both vultures, Osprey, White-tailed Kite (hovering directly above me), Coopers Hawk, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk and American Kestrel.

Over the fields south of SW 216 Street and east of SW 237 Avenue, I had a light-morph Short-tailed Hawk among the hundreds of vultures. Large numbers of waders were present in wet areas, including over 200 Wood Storks and over 50 Roseate Spoonbills. A Limpkin was also present.

Later this morning, I stopped at A D Barnes Park, where I found a Broad-winged Hawk, plus White-crowned Pigeon and 10 species of warblers, including a Blackpoll (the others: Northern Parula, Magnolia, Black-throated Blue, Prairie, Palm, Black-and-white, American Redstart, Ovenbird and Common Yellowthroat).
