I went out this afternoon to relocate a Franklin's Gull that Larry found near the intersection of SW 328 St. and 142 Ave. It was flying between the lake on the north side of 328 and the plowed field to the south. While I was on my way Larry saw it fly off to the south. About 45 minutes later I arrived to find no gull in sight, so I headed south on 142 Ave. to check some lakes along 344 St. As I drove slowly west on 344 east of the racetrack, I was looking at the lake to the south. As I approached a bend in the road near the west end of the lake I noticed a large, black bird fly over the tall grasses. I turned around and pull into an entrance to a side road. I immediately heard the call of an Ani from the grasses. I got out to check but couldn't see it again. This area is worth checking to see if there is one or more, and if so are they using it consistently. Be careful as I noticed cars flying down this road as they make the curve.
For a few years now we haven't had a location where Ani can be found on a regular basis.
