Hey all,

Weather forecast for the next few days looks promising for birders from South Florida to the FL Keys. A cold front did indeed clear South FL and the Keys as forecast, but it has little support and is sort of hung up over the FL Straits. This front is forecast to remain stale until upper level winds turn northwesterly. Currently the southwesterly upper level flow is carrying moisture and cloud cover over from the Yucatan Peninsula. All this while a second front is moving south, along with this front are northerly winds. Normally northerly winds carry birds past South FL. With the hung up front which is pumped with showers and thunderstorms in the path of migrating birds, it is likely that birds will choose to land before flying out over the FL Straits. The current forecast seems to favor the FL Keys as the front is not forecast to turn back north. This does not mean that north of the Keys won't be birdy, we should get our fair share of the pie if this forecast does indeed hold true.

Some of you will remember October 2011 and the awesome birding that came along with a similar set of weather conditions. Conditions for today, tomorrow and likely into the weekend are similar, but with a few differences, mainly location of the frontal boundary and the rain associated with it. All in all it looks like we could have a great few days of birding ahead of us. Fingers crossed that this forecast is the real deal.

Nature is Awesome
