Hi Jeff,
The Chicago Monks have been studied for years. Temperatures inside the nests are several degrees warmer than ambient temperatures -- and they keep out the strong winds. The birds feed _exclusively_ on bird seed obtained from feeders during the winter (which makes me question why they are countable in Illinois). Plus, Monks are a temperate species, so they are used to cold temperatures.
