: Went to Wakodahatchee, Okeeheelee, and Green Cay today.
: Wakodahatchee: Closed until further notice. Best guess will be December. Vegetation stripped, several cypress trees down or leaning. (Recall that trees from 2004 hurricanes were not all righted yet...maybe by choice since the straight look is not essential for Wacko. Some debris in the water holding ponds. Good news is the GBH nesting tree is still in place. Boardwalks looked stable by binocs but couldn't see the east side. New growth is apparent in all areas, especially the water plants. Alligator flag, etc is beat down, gone or wind whipped dead. Some very wild ducks were evident in flocks of 15-25. They were nervous and lifted in flight at passing airplanes and warning horns from equipment at the sewage plant. In short, they were not habituated.
:
: Green Cay: Now open. As with sister Wacko, vegetation is beat up but all trees are leaning or standing. Boardwalks are safe and traffic was light. Just the usual power walkers and joggers. Several photogs were there. Bird life is less than pre-Wilma but good. Warblers are about and the three "p's" are abundant. (Pine/Palm/Prairie) Some sparrows came in in small flocks but took refuge in the very dense shade and no ident was obtained. Coots, gallinules, etc are scarce. Kestrel has taken up abode there and Red shouldered hawk could be heard. Ducks were limited. Glossy ibis were about 35 and then the usual cast of "waders".
:
: Okeeheelee: Home of the painted buntings is still restricted and the road is closed and they mean it! The report is that the wildlife center took damage and opening should be by next week. A good compliment of workers were all about and WPB should have the Okeeheelee wildlife center back in operation quickly.
:
: It was good to see some of the "photogs" out and about and hopefully we will have a good season yet. Weather was gorgeous but until Wacko and Okeeheelee open it might be a bit inefficient for our Dade cousins to drive all the way up here for one of the three.
:
: Soon, soon

Thanks for the update. Hope the storm did not produce major damage for you!
