Other Flying Things

I am writing this from downtown Chicago, where most of the birds have long since headed south (except RoPis). However, while walking in the Loop last night, I was surprised to see several bats whirling around the concrete canyons. Though none slowed down for a close look, I suspect they are Little Brown Bats, based on their size and flying style. What surprises me is that they are not yet in hibernation, considering how little insect activity there is in this cold weather (31 deg. F this morning). Also a mystery is where they roost, though I know they frequently hang out beneath railroad bridges in the summer months. Just a curiosity that I though might interest the birding crowd.

Also, you may want to pick up a copy of today's USA Today, which contains an article on the Ivory Bill in the Life section (Section D).
