NO, NO, NO, NO! Fall migration begins as soon as birds start leaving their breeding grounds and head south, which for some species begins as early as June. We get early migrants such as Louisiana Waterthrush arriving the first week of July.

By the time your yard hummers arrive, which is usually after mid October, fall migration is almost over as far as neotropical migrants is concerned. Those yard hummers are wintering birds, so the were part of fall migration when they passed through areas up north, but down here they are winter visitors. If you wait till October to look for migrants, you will miss most of the species that pass through here. If all that interests you are yard hummers, buntings, and ovenbirds, then that's not such a bad thing. I for one have much higher expectations for migration than that.
