Many, many thanks to Brian Rapoza for leading a most enjoyable trip through Fairchild Gardens and Matheson Hammock today. Even the rainfall turned into a bit of an adventure as we enjoyed the comfortable benches under a very long Chickee Hut just the right size for all of us to remain dry while watching a Softshell Turtle, Basilisk lizard, Green Heron and Great Egret observe us.

As the rain showed no signs of stopping, conversation turned to enjoyable reminiscing of birding trips of bygone years and anticipation of upcoming ones. The rain finally ebbed and we strolled through the breathtaking Cycads, vine-covered pergolas and palm lined lanes of Fairchild, ending up on the more challenging trails of Matheson Hammock. As we were about to leave, eight Hill Mynas flew into the top of a tree and gave us grand views: very thrilling to my wife and I who have never seen them before.

After we said goodbye to fellow birders, my wife and I headed to the indoor butterfly garden at Fairchild (Wings of the Tropics) and learned that none of the exotic butterflies come from chrysalis created inside the indoor garden. The chrysalis is flown in from Central and South America. From week to week, one never knows what one will be seeing at Wings of the Tropics: today there were breathtaking views of Paper Kites,Owl butterflies, and Heliconids.

Great company, unrivaled aesthetic views, and fascinating birding conversation. A great day all around.
