Today Paul Bithorn and I birded Cutler Wetlands and Dump Marsh, in search of gulls and ducks. As soon as we arrived at Cutler Wetlands, we could see the large flock of gulls. It was not too long before we found a couple Franklin's in with the Laughing, Herring, Ring-billed, and Lesser Black-backed. Bald Eagle, American Wigeons, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Long-billed Dowitchers, and Lesser Yellowlegs were seen too. After driving a couple hundred feet east on SW 224 we spotted some shorebirds in the large puddles on the north side of the street.
Least Sandpipers, Greater Yellowlegs, and three American Avocets!
That's two life birds so far today!
Now for Gadwalls at Dump Marsh. Approaching the marsh from the east, we hoped to see the ducks in good light. As soon as Paul said "they like to hang out at that little corner there" (the northeast corner of the northeast pond), six Gadwalls took off and landed in the southeast pond, out of view. Tow showed up, and we waited for the Gadwalls to come back. Blue-winged Teal and a Northern Pintail were out mixed in with the coots. The Gadwalls never came back, but luckily we spotted a lone Gadwall sitting out at the other end of the pond. That makes three life birds for the morning! Thanks a lot Paul!
