This is my first season actively birding in the fall here in Broward. With the easterly winds and high temperatures, I didn't expect much. This attitude rarely leaves me disappointed, and today was no exception.
I started this morning at 6:30 at John U Lloyd on the beach by the pier, scoping for whatnot, and came up with a single Willet and Turnstone, and a single Sandwich Tern.
Went to Tree Tops next, and it was reasonably active around the butterfly garden and Safety Town. Redstarts, Prairies, a single Black and White were present amongst greater numbers of Blue Gray Timewasters.
I continued west on Griffin out to Everglades Holiday Park, and walked out onto the dike to check for swallows. I was rewarded with Bank, Cliff, and Barn Swallows, as well as a Malachite Butterfly and an un-ID'd Clubtail odonate.
I checked the WMA where the Whooping Cranes were seen earlier this year, and it was mostly hot, but with an excruciatingly hot breeze that only emphasized the quiet and lack of birds. So I left.
Back across the county, with a brief stop at the exotic duck collection on Commercial. Then on to Pompano Beach Pier and inlet, and scoped until the heat was just too much.
I hope to get out again this evening, and will try Fern Forest or Tall Cypress. We will see what there is to see.
All told, 50 species, 55 if you count things like Shelduck.
