Today I went hunting the Black-headed and Franklin's Gulls at Cutler Wetlands
and surrounding areas. I went early myself to Cutler Wetland and found none. So
I headed to the construction sites to the north searching for the flocks of
gulls. The flocks were there but not the Black-headed Gull. I did see several
Franklin's and a Bonaparte's.
I searched for about 45 min to and an hour.
I decided to stop by Toe's to see if he found out if we could get to
Tavernier Key to look for the Ash-throated Flycatcher but they still aren't
letting no-residents into the Keys.
We decided to go back and look for the gulls and Avocets that Toe saw the
other day. Rock Jetty joined us for a fun time looking though literally
thousands of gulls. When we arrived at Cutler Wetland there may have been
500-600 gulls, by the time we left there were at least 3,000 gulls.
We saw:
Mostly Laughing
5-10 Franklin's
Several Ring-billed Gulls
10-15 Lesser Black-backed Gulls
Caspian Tern
5 Avocets
Flock of Long-billed Dowitcher (heard the call)
and 1 Aberrant Laughing Gull (Had a bright orange bill, otherwise looked just
like a large laughing gull)
After an hour or so searching the huge flock, we headed to Dump Marsh looking
for water fowl and sparrows.
There we saw:
Red Shouldered Hawk
Red Tailed Hawk
Peregrine Falcon
Kestrel
Coots
Moore Hen
several Gadwall
2 Female Widgeon
Green-wing Teal
Northern Shoveler
Blue-winged Teal
Mottled Ducks
Pied Billed Grebe
Barn Swallows
Tree Swallows
Palm Warbler
Common Yellow Throat
Phoebe
Common Snipe - Life Bird for me!
Aberrant Laughing Gull was in a photo I took early this morning as well as in
the photos taken at Cutler Wetland.
