As Mr. Bithorn states, FDEP has purchased nearly every vacant lot (and several homes) in the Ocean Reef Shores subdivision. The land is now under management as part of Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park. Posting of the properties is incomplete.

Though there are no currrent plans for topographic restoration, work has begun to establish a native plant community appropriate to the new elevation of the mostly filled lots.

Also as stated by Mr Bithorn, back-country permits are required (and issued by the Florida Park Service) to enter any of these park properties. Permits can be obtained at John D. Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (mile post 102.5 Overseas Highway, 305-451-1202). Please bring some sort of photo identification (a Florida driver's license will work) when you come to pick up your permit. Without the map that accompanies the permit, it is very difficult to know when you are trespassing on private or park lands. Calling in advance helps minimize the time it takes to pick up a permit. Ask for the park biologist (Jim Duquesnel) or Eileen Davis. If neither is avaiable, state the purpose of your call and you will be transferred to someone who can help you.

Please be aware that the neighborhood is quite aware that many "strangers" have been poking about with binoculars. As might be expected, the reactions are mixed. It is best if all birders maintain a respectful distance from the residences (I would suggest 100 feet as a minimum), and please keep your voices down as some residents may work at night and sleep during the day. Especially on unpaved Marseilles Boulevard, please also keep car speeds down to minimize the dust raised and to protect unwary children, pets, and wildlife. Thank you for your cooperation.
