Checking the condition of park nature trails has given me an added bonus of birding which has been pretty active during the week. Today at Greynolds Park a Cerulean Warbler (1st year)was observed along with 15 other warbler species. In the picnic area across from the boathouse, Strangler fig trees rich in berries are providing a feast for warblers, vireos (Red-eyed, tanagers (summer & scarlet), and a Baltimore oriole. A vocal Wood Pewee was seen along the nature trail as well Yellow-billed cuckoos. A kettle of 10 Broad-winged hawks as well a merlin and Peregrine Falcon were observed soaring over the park. On Thursday at A.D. Barnes Park, a Swainson's warbler was seen on the trail across from the butterfly garden along with 11 species of warblers. At Castellow Park on Wednesday, the Rufous Hummingbird still around in the butterfly garden. Also a Blue Grosbeak was at the feeder with House Sparrows. On Wednesday, Matheson Hammock trail to the back nursery had 10 species of warblers, including a Chestnut-sided Warbler and several Magnolias. On the same day, a Mangrove Cuckoo was observed in the visitor center parking lot at the C. Deering Estate in a gumbo limbo tree feeding on berries. These and 2 other Miami-Dade Park sites are now part of the Great Florida Birding Trail which will be dedicated in the spring 06. Enjoy the great birding opportunities!
