Toe, Trey and I headed out for a quick morning of birding after Toe was able to rouse himself and join us. Checking the Ag fields first, we saw nothing but Barn Swallows and Killdeer until a single Pectoral Sandpiper flew overhead. Heading into the park, we had a Northern Bobwhite calling loudly from the pines, but dipped on Bluebirds, which Trey and I wanted for BOTD.
At the scrapes, shorebird numbers were low but we managed to tally 9 species, including 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper, 3 Pectorals, plus both Yellowlegs, Least, Semipalmated and Black-bellied Plovers, Killdeer, and Black-necked Stilt. I spotted a very young bird about 10 feet away that had us all mystified, especially when it walked over to the car. After much debate and consulting our lifeline, it was determined to be a newly fledged Brown-headed Cowbird. Also seen in the area was a Reddish Egret and 3 Sandhill Cranes.
Heading back to SW 112 Ave, we found a small cloud of swallows, almost all Barns, but we did pick out 2 Cliffs, a Cave, and Toe spotted a Bank. We ended the morning at the landfill, where we added several Stilt Sandpipers and Lesser Black-backed Gull.
