The breeding colony of Least Terns in Fort Lauderdale seems to have had some success. It is on a private beach, but the owners have been cooperating with Broward County to protect the acre or so of beach being used. Local birders, including members of TAS, are helping by keeping an eye out for intruders on weekends. The beach-goers have not bothered the birds. Can't say the same for the local Cooper's Hawks. An informal count made this morning showed about 120 birds, maybe 20-25% of them juveniles, and three fledglings still running around and hiding under things. Looks like a good season. Hopefully they will return next year.
