Fig. 11 on page 9 of your report, you describe a Spruce Grouse. I believe your photo is actually a Ruffed Grouse. I'm from the Northeast and have seen quite a few grouse of both species. The longer tail on this bird, with a dark tip, along with streaky/splotchy flanks points toward Ruffed Grouse. Spruce Grouse would have a shorter tail, a more checkered side, and grayer color overall. The bird's crest isn't raised, but it doesn't always have to be. Just thought I'd let you know. Great report!
