Black Tern, South Dade Landfill

Birds are definitely on the move and each day brings something different. I went out this afternoon planning to get a Great Blue Heron for my Bird-A-Day. I quickly got one on 87 Ave and 212 St, but decided to look for something better. I next stopped at Gate C on 97 Ave by the landfill and spotted a molting Black Tern. While this species can be abundant in other parts of the state, especially in the sod farm area of Palm Beach, it can be hard to find here in Dade. This one trumps Great Blue for B-A-D, but I decided to continue looking. I then went to the field on 256 St. off 107 Ave. and found over 2 dozen Greater Yellowlegs, a couple Lesser Yellowlegs, some Black-necked Stilts, and some Least Sandpipers, but nothing better than the Black Tern. I tried the Quarry Lake on 107 Ave. in hopes of a Common Tern but dipped. There was a Bronzed Cowbird on the wire along the way.

Despite the time of year, temperatures out there are actually quite comfortable due to all the clouds and rain, and at this time a really good bird could just be minutes away. Get out and look people. There's a Curlew Sandpiper somewhere with my name on it.
