Hi all! If you have time this weekend, please stop by Virginia Key and share why we want North Point to be restored:
This is an important area for especially important for wildlife as it borders the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve and Critical Wildlife Area, important for manatees and Sea turtles. It is also coastal habitat along the Atlantic Flyway for migrating birds!

Let's reach out to the Virginia Key Bike Club and share our thoughts. Bikers and Enviros. should work together, don't you think?

More info below:

Virginia Key needs your help! A small group of bikers are protesting this weekend to the Restoration of Virginia Key North Point. We need to reach out to them and explain that the Restoration Plan will recreate native habitat lost, much needed by wildlife. Are you able to join us?

Tropical Audubon has been deeply involved in the conservation and restoration of Virginia Key since the 1970s. Many of you have followed the series of events that led to the latest Master Plan finally approved in 2010 in collaboration with stakeholders and environmentalists alike (more than 350 groups, bikers included!).

The approved Plan has taken into consideration the removal of invasive exotic species from VKNP, which do not provide a service to native wildlife, and plans for replanting of native species to re-create lost South Florida habitat fully restoring this area.

North Point is especially important for wildlife as it borders the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve and Critical Wildlife Area, important for manatees and Sea turtles. It is also coastal habitat along the Atlantic Flyway for migrating birds. This Plan perfectly balances outdoor recreational activities and the conservation of critically important habitat for wildlife. We need to share VKNP, it is not only for bikers, but for birders, kayakers, runners, hikers, fisherman and others alike. Bikers and environmentalists must work together, not against each other.

Please show up tomorrow or Sunday between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. (recommended times) and share why you support the restoration of VKNP! If you cannot attend, kindly send your comments to those who are against this Restoration Plan so they can be better informed:

Please contact the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Director, Juan Pascual and thank him for supporting the Master Plan. Please ask him to move forward with the proposed restoration of Virginia Key: jpascual@miamigov.com
