This afternoon I saw an American White Pelican circling over Southwest Ranches in southwest Broward County about a mile east of I-75 just south of Griffin Road. I am used to seeing them in the Storm Water Treatment Areas this time of year and I have seen them in WCA-2B west of Markham Park but it was surprising to see one over a residential area.

This morning I was at the Matheson Hammock Park nature trail west of Old Cutler Road where I found very few birds; a few Northern Cardinals, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, and a Blue Jay. Insects were also surprisingly scarce, there were a few common butterflies around but only one dragonfly, an Eastern Pondhawk, and the mosquitos were negligible. Has this area been sprayed heavily for mosquitos?
