On the evening of Tuesday, June the 11th, we had a flock of 45 Greater Flamingos fly over our skiff as we were idling in the channel at Matheson Hammock. They were heading south, possibly to Turkey Point. This is the largest flock I've seen outside of ENP (I had 79 on an NAMC in Snake Bight years ago).
In the last few weeks 32 were photographed in Garfield Bight east of Flamingo and 7 were seen in Snake Bight.
Such an incredible bird. A great read is Paul Zahl's "Flamingo Hunt" published in 1952. Looks at the last great Flamingo colonies in the Bahamas.
