Went to Green Cay yesterday in the late afternoon to see what was brewing there. There were many birds but mostly the Florida resident types.
Started with 3 White-winged Doves by the entrance feeder on the left
Then a beautiful immature Green Heron landed on a snag with pretty reeds all around.
From there I checked out the male and female Yellow-crowned Night Herons. They are sitting there in their nest but I don't think an egg has been laid yet.
Then I headed to the back (east side) . I saw some movement in the Elderberry trees and saw a mockingbird and a Common Grackle leaving it. All of sudden, I saw a Northern Flicker yellow shafted on it. It was feasting away on the sweet berries. It was actively feeding for a couple of minutes and allowed me some decent shots. I actually had never notice the beautiful heart shape it has on the back of its head.
After that , I headed north and was checking out the many pairs of Black-necked Stilts with their chicks, there were dozens of Purple Martins with their immatures flying around and splashing in the water. Saw about 6 Chimney Swifts above me...too swift for me and lighting was already not good. Did not see a Least Bittern but there are definitely there with chicks too! All the herons, egrets, Cormorants, and Anhingas present. I guess the best part of the day was spotting that Northern Flicker (State bird of Alabama).
