Did a little post-hurricane birding in Key West yesterday and today. (Though no one was expecting it, we actually got whacked by Katrina pretty good down here. Drove my car through a 15 inch puddle and it still won't start.)
Yesterday chased an unconfirmed report of a Red-footed Boobie on Rest Beach. Did not see one or even anything close to something that could be confused with one, though people I know who aren't birders said they did. I did see:
Black Skimmer
Brown Pelican
Sanderling
Willet
Ruddy Turnstone
Short-billed Dowitcher
Least Sandpiper
Laughing Gulls hanging in place in the wind, three feet off the beach.
Yellow-crowned Night Heron (1 adult, many juvies)
Snowy Egret
Barn Swallow
Cattle Egret
Solitary Sandpiper
Yellow Warbler
Black & White Warbler
Prothonotary Warbler
Kentucky Warbler
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Common Moorehen
White-crowned Pigeon
Common Minah
Went out today for an hour of afternoon Power Birding (trademark) with Dr. Mark Whiteside. Saw 13 warbler species:
Black & White Warbler (many)
Prothonotary Warbler (many)
Hooded Warbler (male)
Prairie Warbler
Kentucky Warbler (!)
Golden-winged Warbler (!!)
Louisiana Waterthrush
Northern Waterthrush
Ovenbird
Yellow Warbler
Northern Parula
American Redstart (1 male, several female)
Worm-eating Warbler
Also:
Red-eyed Vireo
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Purple Martin (100 or so)
Barn Swallow (1,000 or so)
Cliff Swallow (juvenile perched)
Northern Rough-winged Swallow
Royal Tern
Sandwich Tern
Forster's Tern
Which is not bad for an hour.
