Katrina's wrath

I hope everyone made it OK with this former tropical storm now turned Cat. 2 Hurricane. Having lived here for 37 years, I can safely say we had 80 mph winds last night at my house in Cutler Ridge. Luckily, everyone I've spoken to is just fine, albeit some fallen trees and power outages. Having spent most of today without power, I took a quick tour near my house to see what the storm did in the way of birds. Black Point produced about a dozen Sooty Terns flying from north to south over the end of the jetty. They were in two flocks. On the jetty itself were 4 Spotted Sandpipers, a Semipalm Sandpiper and Plover, two Black Skimmers, and two dozen Least Terns. Aside from the Sootys, I saw no other pelagics. The walk back produced a Northern Waterthrush, Prairie, and some Gnatcatchers. Now some bad news: the Cutler Wetlands, which until yesterday have been so productive for shorebirds, are now Cutler Lake. My heart sank when I saw it, even though I was expecting it considering how high the water came on my property last night. It's a shame really, since I'm sure this would have continued to produce good birds for another month. Let's hope the water comes down a bit. Good luck to everyone, and good birding, eventually.

P.S. Does anyone know if the Sod Farm trip is still happening tomorrow?
