Steve -- Did you rule out a female Mourning Warbler? Your description seems to fit, especially as a large warbler. The yellow is often described as "oporornis yellow" and extends through the undertail coverts. The tail seems short because the coverts are extended. Email me if you would like to see photos of this bird close up.
Though they prefer to stay mid-level or lower on their breeding grounds, migration is probably "anything goes" for foraging techniques.
