This morning Trey and I checked out Barnes and the Cutler Wetlands. We found six warber species at Barnes, including Worm-eating, Parula, Redstart, Yellow-throated, Black-and-White, and Prairie. The Yellow-throated were found in good numbers. Gnatcatchers were plentiful. There was also a Summer Tanager in the northern pine area adjacent to the canal. Some Red-eyed Vireos were also there.
The Cutler Wetlands continue to hold good numbers of shorebirds, with more Pectoral Sandpipers than in recent days. Also there were Least, Semipalmated, Western, both Yellowlegs, at least 4 Dowitchers, Semipalmated Plovers, Black-necked Stilts and Killdeer. A Lesser Black-backed Gull was mixed in with the one million Laughing Gulls. Everything seemed to spook suddenly, and we found the culprit: an adult Bald Eagle came in to declare lordship over the site. It's not everyday that you see an eagle standing on a mud flat so close to home. As we were leaving we met up with Bill Boeringer, another regular at this gem of a shorebird site, at least for now until the "mitigation" is completed. Still nervous about that. An all-around nice morning of birding without goint too far. Good birding to all.
