Ani sightings have been fairly frequent this summer. Interesting message on BrdBrains Listserv:
"My brother-in-law and I challenged the heat and headed south for some
birding Tuesday and Wednesday. We saw a lone Snail Kite across from the
Tower Motel to start the trip off. Tuesday, and then again on Wednesday,
we located a large mixed flock of Parakeets on SW 89th Ave and SW 83 St
north of the canal in Kendall. They were hanging out in the large trees
behind the two houses on the corner. The majority were White-winged, but
Yellow-chevroned were also in attendance. We also had White-crowned
Pigeons in the same location. We struck out on the Oriole Tuesday, but
located two calling Wednesday morning just one street west on SW 89 CT and
SW 83 ST. We heard them while driving around with our heads hanging out
the window. No Bulbuls for us.

On Tuesday evening we had 3-4 Antillean Nighthawks calling at the west end
of the Marathon airport. Show time was 8:01 PM. They made a few close
fly-bys and were out of there within a few minutes.

We made brief stops at Largo and Long Key for Mangrove Cuckoo (evening and
morning) but didn t see much of anything at either location.

The Ani s at the Fort Lauderdale airport were very cooperative (1230).
There was one just as we made the turn on the fence (by the construction
sign). We parked at the greenery and walked back finding another.
Eventually two young birds popped up for a brief glimpse. Their upper
mandibles apparently had yet to catch up with their lower. FYI, we also
tried the outlet mall in Florida City twice on the way in (evening) and
way out (morning), but only found Common Myna and Common Nighthawk.

We struck out on the Swamphen at Pembrooke Wednesday afternoon and headed
home via the sod fields. Not much to speak of there.

To round out the trip we saw some young Iguanas at Matheson Park, a large
Knight Anole with the Parakeets, and some really large Iguanas at Largo
Botanical Reserve.

Chris"
