An extraordinarily early light-phase Short-tailed Hawk was seen Saturday 8/6 about 11 a.m. flying in the vicinity of St. John Neumann Church (SW 107 Ave and SW 120 St). The bird was low (50-75') and being mobbed by grackles. A lt-p STHA wintered in the area last year; could this be the returning bird?
I've never seen one this early in the year- this probably beats my previous early bird by 2 1/2 months! I understand there have been even some summer records for ENP, but I have to believe this is a record early date for Kendall.
