Fifteen enthusiastic birders joined me for the TAS Big Cypress Walk this morning. This included Brian Rapoza and Bob Pace, who were both very effective in spotting capacities. We started at the Oasis Visitor Center, proceeded to Kirby-Storter Boardwalk, then hit Loop Road at Sweetwater Strand and Gator Hook Trail.
Most satisfying bird: Swallow-tailed Kites, pretty much everywhere - one of the most beautiful and graceful creatures on the planet.
Warblers: We got nine: No. Parula, Cape May, Magnolia, Palm, Black-and-white, Blackpoll (very numerous), American Redstart, Northern Waterthrush, Common Yellowthroat.
Other birds we liked: Indigo Bunting, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, a flyover of Cedar Waxwings, and four woodpeckers (Northern Flicker, Downy, Red-bellied, Pileated).
Best herp of the day: Florida Cottonmouth at Kirby-Storter.
Best butterfly: Carolina Satyr.
Best wildflower: Bartram's Rosegentian.
Prettiest Ode: Common Green Darner (Anax junius)
Thanks to all for joining me for a great day in the Big Cypress. Love hearing the "sounds of silence" when you get way out there in the swamp.
