This does seem a possibility too. I was similarly confused at Wellington Wetlands by what looked to be a mockingbird but had a strange curved bill. I was not familiar with these aberrations, but was told by others helping me ID the bird from my photo that it was something that occasionally happened in mockingbirds as well.
