I went out to visit the Matheson Pileated Woodpeckers today. Figured it was about time to see some feeding activity. I walked up to the tree, looked at the hole and was greeted by a female Red-bellied Woodpecker, who promptly made a change of shift with her mate. So the question is did the pileateds move out and the red-bellies take over the empty hole, or did the red-bellies force them out? Anyone know?
