At 6:00 this afternoon, while walking my dog around El Portal, I noticed a large amount of brotogeris parakeets in the vicinity of Horace Mann Middle School. The birds roost near by in Unincorporated Dade County, across the Little River Canal from El Portal. Psittacids often "stage", or meet up together like that before heading off to roost. For those hoping to see the spectacle of about fifty White-winged Parakeets and about fifteen Yellow-chevroned Parakeets, cruise the area around the school along NW 2 Avenue, between 84 and 90 street. The birds departed southward in a huge flock at approx 6:30, so arrive any time before then and you will see the birds everywhere you turn. Psittacids have the tendEncy to change roosts and staging areas often, but lets hope this location remains reliable.

A couple Prairie Warblers were also seen in the area.
