Took off this past weekend and visited Viera Wetlands in Melbourne and Merritt Island NWR.
Viera had few birds, although there were still some Ring Necked Ducks and White Pelicans in thte "Klick" Ponds area. The Scaracaras ( ;) ) were there but not really close. Check out the lonely pine tree east of the easternmost empoundment dike and south of the portapotties.
Merritt had the usual suspects -- a few Spoonbills and a skimmer or two, three Reddish egrets (all dark phase) were staggering home from a night with far too much alcohol involved out on the mud flats and the three little piggies were actually not little nor three (four) in number.
Stopped off at Green Cay on the way back. Stilts, Least Bittern (west side of large loop just south of the "cypress island" on the NW corner of the board walk). Roberta Edwarda Feline (Ms. Bobcat to the humor challenged)put on a nice show in the entrance area at dusk. She seems to like that area (from the parking lot in to the 1st bird feeders) if you are looking to see one of these fascinating and none too tiny kitties. I'll attach a link or two to photos from other days.... Also if you are interested in "the Chat" (Yellow Breasted) as opposed to "le chat" it is in the same gereral area but more often on the west side of that stretch of boardwalk -- it was seen yesterday as well.
Enjoy,
Grover
