This morning I was filming common nighthawks at a flooded field on US 27 in Palm Beach County. The field is about 6 miles south of the intersection
with 827. It's the only flooded field on the east side of the highway visible from the road.
This bird appeared about 10:30 and stayed about 5 minutes. I suppose it is a lesser nighthawk, but the wings are really round, even for that bird. The tail is very short, unlike a lesser nighthawk. Maybe it's molting. The flight was very buoyant, and very nightjar-like. The bird never came very close, and was not calling. I apologize for the quality of this photo. There are other views, but I haven't figured out how to post two yet.
