I filled in as leader for this Saturday's walk at Loxahatchee and, while not as spectacular as this past Wednesday's feeding frenzy, we did have large numbers of waders in the C-6 impoundment, in the ponds behind the Visitors' Center, and in the pond near the bus parking lot. It was the first time this season (on one of the walks) that there were a decent number of birds in C-6. The adult male Snail Kite was also checking out C-6 as has been the case for the last many weeks.

We had few but various warblers between the bus parking lot and the Visitors' Center and along Lee Road -- Palm, Cape May (2 or 3), singing Parulas, male American Redstart, and Common Yellowthroat.

We were able to locate only one of the Great Horned Owls. It looked to be lying on its side!

The Marsh Trail was very quiet when we returned from the frenzy. C-6 had pretty much emptied out except for the ducks. The LILA area was dead, the Red Shouldered Hawk nest was empty, and we didn't find any Buntings at all, though we did have a very cooperative House Wren singing his brains out.

I took a few photos of the frenzy but not much more. They're linked below.

Only two more Wednesday morning walks this season. Then we're in hiatus until next November.

Rick
