FORTY Birders joined me yesterday for a beautiful morning bird walk to both Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden & Matheson Hammock. In the group we had a family from Oregon who enjoyed many eastern life birds. How exciting!

It was the second day of the TAS Bird-A-Thon which we encourage all birders to take advantage of. This is your chance to give back to the birds! TAS will be using the Bird-a-thon money to fund bird conservation and we have two projects that we have as a priority this year. The first is to re-establish the fountain on the Dry Tortugas. The second is to fund a flamingo tagging study where we will be working together with Everglades National Park and ZooMiami to study the movement of these wonderful birds that is so questioned today. So please take part in the Bird-a-thon and have fun doing what you love doing and raise mony for the birds.

We started out our day in Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden moving along the Arboretum loop of the Kushlan Bird Trail then the full loop of the Lowland trail. Along the way our highlights included great looks at Yellow-cheveron Parakeets, Eastern Kingbirds, a perched American Kestral and eight species of warblers including Prothonatary Warbler. We also had an early migrant Red-eyed Vireo in fresh spring plumage and a couple of not-yet departed Painted Buntings & Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

We went over to Matheson where the highlight of the day was not just seeing the Redheaded Woodpecker but seeing the Redheaded Woodpecker, two Red-bellied Woodpeckers and a Piliated Woodpecker in one binocular view. With the Downey Woodpecker seen at Fairchild, we had a total of four woodpeckers species for the day. Also in that same tree was an Eastern Screech Owl in view. We finished the day with a Magnificent Frigate Bird high over the Matheson-Fairchild parking lots (I included it on both lists). We totaled 51 species for the day

I want to thank all who attended and also want to thank all at Fairchild, Arlene, Stephanie, Stephanie, and Gaby who always make us feel like VIP's each time we visit the Garden.
