This morning, I went shorebirding in the Ft Myers Beach area. During a quick stop at Carlos Pass, I found five Snowy Plover and two Wilson's Plover. At Bunche Beach, I found the Long-billed Curlew (present there all winter) at the far eastern end of the beach. Also seen at Bunche Beach were Black-bellied, Semipalmated and Piping Plover, Willet, Marbled Godwit, Ruddy Turnstone, Red Knot, Sanderling, Semipalmated, Western and Least Sandpiper, Dunlin and Short-billed Dowitcher. At the Bailey Tract of Ding Darling NWR on Sanibel, I only added Killdeer to my shorebird day list. I stopped there twice to see the Virginia Rail reported there this weekend. I saw a Sora, but no Virginia Rail; other birders reported that it was seen periodically today. Between visits to the Bailey Tract, I drove Ding Darling's wildlife drive, but only added American White Pelican to my day list. I returned to Miami via Tamiami Trail; in marshes between the Fakahatchee Strand boardwalk and SR 29, I saw Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs and Long-billed Dowitcher, bringing my shorebird total to an even 20 for the day.
