The last time I saw my male Ruby-throated Hummer was Mar. 15th. This bird has fed at one feeder very reliably since October. The water level has not decreased and there was no sighting today. I continue to see the female. This is keeping with the same pattern as last year. The male left first and the female at least a week later. My backyard birdbaths have been active. I have had a first time ever White-eyed Vireo fly from a perch above and dip it's belly in the water and return to the perch. It will repeat this sequence several times/never lands on the birdbath. Two Yellow-rumps fought over space at the birdbath and a beautiful male Common Yellowthroat bathed and then preened above the birdbath on a perch with an unobstructed view. The Gray Catbird and 5-6 Painted Buntings delight in long baths. Even the Cardinals were in on the fun. They seem to prefer the 12 inch terracotta plant saucers elevated on some cement pavers rather than my formal birdbath. I believe a big factor is I am able to place the saucers in areas where the birds feel the safest from predators. The small size of my yard affords close-up looks at these delightful creatures. ----Not to be forgotton was a visit by an immature male American Redstart and Palm Warbler to the birdbath this a.m..
