Ben Woodard of Pensacola and I birded the Miami area, as well as south Miami-Dade and Everglades National Park from 3/12-14. A close friend of mine, Ben came down to look for reptiles but has also recently picked up birding; virtually every species was a life bird for him. Excluding exotics that are not established, we had 131 species for the trip, with 117 of them being in or just outside of Everglades National Park. We had 17 shorebird species and 17 warbler species.
On 3/12, we took visiting birders, also visiting from the Pensacola area, out to look for exotics in the Miami Shores area, coming up with Common Mynas, Nanday, White-winged, Monk, and White-eyed Parakeets, and Chestnut-fronted Macaws before they headed off for the Thick-billed Vireo. We left for Everglades National Park, where we would camp at Long Pine Key for two nights. On the way, we stopped in Kendall around noon and found Egyptian Goose, Mitred Parakeet, and Hill Myna.
We spent Tuesday afternoon through most of Thursday in Everglades National Park and the Lucky Hammock area, visiting many locations more than once.
