Dear South Florida Birders,
A few of you may have been noticing the tagged vultures around Everglades National Park or thereabouts. These birds were marked as part of a study of the movements of black vultures in and around Everglades National Park (and to try and develop management strategies to reduce damage to vehicles at some of the observation points). For anyone birding the keys, a group of turkey vultures has also been tagged in Key West. This research depends on reports of sightings by members of the community.
There are a few ways to submit your sightings. What we need is:
Observer name; Date; Location; Time; species (BLVU or TUVU); color of tag (most are pink); and the 3 letter ID code on the tag, such as EHM reported in an earlier post. The tags are cattle ear tags placed in the bird's right wing. The ID code is visible on both sides of the wing. Photos are greatly appreciated as we are interested in their behavior as well.
For more information on this project and how to report sightings, please see the following websites:

For those of you who know me, I will accept texts of sightings. If you can, email sightings to John Humphrey at John.S.Humphrey@aphis.usda.gov
We appreciate people such as yourself helping us with this research by contributing this valuable information.
