For the fourth Sunday of the past five, I visited the Matheson nursery, (as we called it when we lived near the trooper's trailer on the west side of Old Cutler Road) to photograph the great horned owl that has been hanging about, and was rewarded with some decent shots,(despite a battery depleted flash) if not much sunlight. This great bird was found(and pointed out to me after I'd had no luck) by birder Mark Bailey closer to the ground and the service road than previously. I got some good shots before we spooked the bird by getting too close, shortly before Larry Manfredi arrived with clients bearing cameras.5 pairs of eyes were useless to relocate the bird, and Larry and clients wandered off to shoot the red headed woodpecker, which had made an appearance an hour earlier for me. To everyone's delight, Mark again found the owl where it had surreptitiously alighted(virtually out in the open), Larry and crew were summoned, and 4 sets of cameras now rolled. In a nearby tree a pair of pileated woodpeckers continued pushing debris out of their soon to be completed nest hole, and an American kestrel allowed some distant views.Photos at the link below--probably the best I will ever do of this owl-unless it chooses to pose with a prey item or a chick..Best viewed by clicking the slideshow icon.
