I visited STA 1-W, Green Cay, & Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge in the past few days and i did see some mild indications that a mild migration is just starting.
At STA 1-Wfor about an hour this past Friday and had the following:
Flushed American Bittern
Hundreds of American Coot
100+ Pied-billed Grebe
American Wigeon (less numbers than before)
A few pairs of Northern Shovelers at a distance
2 Black Skimmers
A few Ruddy ducks
A few immature Ring-necked ducks
Most of all Herons and Egrets
Green Cay in the past few days:
4 Least Bittern
1 American Bittern
Cinnamon Teal (don't know if it is the same i saw a month or so ago - it does look very different and it's a good-looking one (photo attached).
No Hawks or Harriers
I spotted a N. Waterthrush
Lots of Tree Swallows
Herons and Egrets abundant
1 Black-Crowned Night Heron ( Young adult feeding in daytime)
Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge: Yesterday and today
Great Horned Owl on nest with Chick continues near the entrance on the left side in the Bald Cypress trees
Northern Parulas are back (photo)
A few Carolina Wrens
A couple of White-eyed Vireos (picture attached)
Lesser Yellowlegs
Tree Swallows (hundreds)
A few Painted Buntings
A few Indigo Buntings (photo of male with molting plumage attached.
American Kestrel in flight (picture attached)
Great- Crested Flycatcher
Some Cardinals
Plenty of Gray Catbirds
1 Snail Kite feeding (male)
Some Common Yellowthroats
1 Savannah Sparrow
A few Downy Woodpeckers
Boat-tailed Grackles, Red-winged (hundreds).
Some European Starlings
A fewRed-belled Woodpeckers
4-6 Pileated Woodpeckers (M, F & juveniles on Marsh trail)
White and Glossy Ibis abundant
Herons and Egrets (MINUS Reddish Egret, Great White Heron)
Palm and Yellow-rumped still plentiful
Purple Galinulles
I have not yet seen a Swallow-tailed Kite yet but i know they'll be here soon. Haven't seen the Short-tailed Hawks in a week (may have gone back up north in the state).
