The last two days I have spent a good deal of time in Morningside Park just north of the downtown Miami area. I saw my first Red-shouldered Hawk and Black-crowned Night-heron for Morningside, and the usual Yellow-crowned Night-herons and Cooper's Hawks were around. Most notable were two juvenile (appeared second winter) Lesser Black-backed Gulls flying along with the Laughing. Magnificent Frigatebirds, Brown Pelicans, Anhingas, and Least Terns were around as well. At night, I managed to find two Eastern Screech-owls, including one fuzzy juvenile. We (my friends and I) sat on the lawn for a while to watch the birds feed by a street light, and even a police officer watched them with us when he asked what we were up to.
Off to Great Britain on Monday,
Alex Harper
