I scouted the C-357 Sparrow Fields and Chekika this cool Sunday morning. There is a definite surge in sparrow activity at the former -- Savannah and Grasshopper Sparrows were abundant. Swamp Sparrow (5), Lincoln's Sparrow (8), and Clay-colored Sparrow (8) were in good numbers as well and easy to see. Other birds of note included Northern Harrier (3), White-tailed Kite (2), and Merlin. A dessicated pond had a Northern Waterthrush.

The area around Chekika had very large numbers of Tree Swallows -- definitely more numerous and widespread today than earlier in the season. The hammock itself was relatively quiet with some of the more common warblers, including Northern Parula, Northern Waterthrush (2), Prairie Warbler, American Redstart (2), Palm Warbler (5), and Yellow-rumped Warbler (many). A small flock of American Robins (~20) flew overhead.

Remember that Saturday, March 9th is the C-357 Sparrow Fields + Chekika Unit walk. Meet at 700AM at the gate just west of the C-357 Canal.

Directions from the TAS events calendar website: From Krome Avenue, drive west 3.0 miles on Richmond Drive (SW 168 Street). Park near the entrance, at a yellow gate just west of the C-357 Canal.
