It has been my experience that an all black bill and other subtle features are good for Brown-crested hear in South Florida, but the books and the experts say the call is the determining factor.It by far is the easiest way to tell one Myiarchus from another.
Knowing there is a Brown-crested in an area, if I saw a Myiarchus with an all black bill I may call it a Brown-crested without hearing the call. But not if I was the first to spot the bird. I would suggest it may be a Brown-crested, but would leave it as a maybe.
