I paid Kendale Lakes Park a visit this morning just as the fog started to lift -- a flock of ~33 Cedar Waxwings was in the southwestern corner of the park, actively feeding on the ripening fruit of a strangler fig. A pair of Cooper's Hawks were attracted to the commotion and flushed them several times while I was there.

Other birds in the park included a bread and butter mix of wintering passerines: Eastern Phoebe, Blue-headed Vireo (2), Orange-crowned Warbler, Northern Parula (3), Yellow-throated Warbler (2), Black-and-white Warbler (3), Prairie Warbler, Palm Warbler (8), and Yellow-rumped Warbler (~32).

Matheson Hammock did not have any waxwings, but there were plenty of Yellow-rumped Warblers around (~60)! The Blue-winged Warbler was feeding by itself in the islands of scrubby vegetation south of the stone pavillion -- the same spot where I had originally seen it in late October of 2012. Other birds of note in the picnic area included both Yellow-throated (2) and Blue-headed Vireos, a juvenile dark morph Short-tailed Hawk, and Cape May Warbler (2).

The wide service path on the west side of Old Cutler Road had a feeding flock that included a Worm-eating Warbler, a White-eyed Vireo, and a mystery vireo that I had originally seen in early December -- and continues to elude my camera. A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers were busy excavating a hole in a snag right by the trail. I also had one of the two Red-headed Woodpeckers in the open area where it has been reported for the past few months or so.
