Today I went offshore on a fishing/birding trip with Rock Jetty, Albert, Ronald and Mike. The fish did not cooperate, but the birds were definitely there! We started off with Brown Booby at Fowey Rocks Lighthouse, then shortly spotted one each Cory's and Greater Shearwater. Little did we know this was just a prelude of good things to come. In about 800 feet of water we found a large school of tuna feeding at the surface with dozens of both Cory's and Greater Shearwaters. Later in the morning, we put a chum bag over and had shearwaters literally on our boat. Really! Sorry you couldn't have a better look, as Paul B. says. And here I was worried about not getting a good enough look to ID the birds. Our final tally in 4 hours:
Brown Booby 2
Cory's Shearwater 50-60
Greater Shearwater 150+
Audubon's Shearwater 1
Bridled Tern 40
Sooty Tern 5
Band-rumped Storm Petrel 1
Wison's Storm Petrel 1
And of course, Royal and Least Terns, Frigatebirds, Cormorants.....
Considering our luck, I can only imagine how the Marathon trip went. I'll bet they saw some pretty cool stuff. Go get em guys!
