Hello everyone! I'm back in Miami and getting my south florida birding fix. yesterday afternoon I drove down to the keys. At the Key Largo botanical site there were singing Black-whiskered and White-eyed Vireos and several White-crowned Pigeons. Next stop was the government center on Marathon, where I watched the Least Terns and my life Roseate Terns. I ended the day at the marathon airport, where I saw Common Mynas, two Black-necked Stilts, and my second lifer, the Antillean Nighthawks, which put on quite a show. This morning I drove down to Flamingo for two more life birds, Gull-billed Tern and Shiny cowbird. The gull-billed tern out on the sandbar was hard to see without a scope, but I got a decent look considering. Then I ran around like a maniac chasing blackbirds and trying not to be carried away by mosquitoes, and finally I located a few Shiny cowbirds in a tree with some Brown-headed cowbirds. Great looks, and I got to hear their song. Wow! Tomorrow it's off to Kissimmee Prairie, where I will be working for the summer on the Florida grasshopper sparrow.
