I birded my yard the other day and picked up quite a few birds and one I've never seen before. I had 24 species, but the best were the American Goldfinches. I set up a sock feeder full of thistle a month or two ago & it's finally getting some action. Four were observed hanging on & pulling out the seeds. Around 10 more, in a loose flock, were seen in the oak trees feeding on the catkins, which are now in bloom. I also have an Ovenbird that likes to come to the feeder & pick through the seed. I had a 'mystery bird' show up at the suet feeder, but the only info I got was a vireo-size bird with a curved bill, short tail & whitish belly before it flew off. It was right at sunrise, so the lighting wasn't good. I'll keep looking for it. Other birds are as follows:
Turkey Vulture 16 fly-overs
Rock Pigeon 4
Eurasian Collared-Dove 1
White-winged Dove 5
Ruby-throated Hummingbird 2
Red-bellied Woodpecker 1
Downy Woodpecker 1
White-eyed Vireo 3
Blue Jay 2
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 13
Gray Catbird 7
European Starling 2
Ovenbird 2
Black-and-white Warbler 1
American Redstart 1
Northern Parula 5
Palm Warbler 3
Pine Warbler 2
Yellow-rumped Warbler 11
Northern Cardinal 3
Indigo Bunting 1
Painted Bunting 7
Common Grackle 2
American Goldfinch 14 A flock of ten were observed feeding in the tops of oak trees on the catkins (flowers?) or blooms, and 4 were observed feeding on the sock feeder full of thistle.
