A check yesterday evening on a Purple Martin roost in front of the Racetrack gas station on the west side of Davie Road (SW 64th Ave.)about quarter mile south of I-595 that was discovered last summer revealed that it is once again being used. At around 8:00 PM there were about 2000 martins on the wires in front of the gas station and a good many more in the Royal Palms and Jambolan (Java) Plums between the wires and the road. The roost is also used by a large number of European Starlings and a few Red-winged Blackbirds and Boat-tailed Grackles.
A severe thunderstorm that passed through Hollywood Friday afternoon killed at least six Yellow-crowned Night-Heron nestlings in the rookery in the main campground area in the southeast corner of TY Park. Most of the dead were younger birds that died when their nests were blown out of the Australian Pines by winds that reached about 60 mph. There are a couple of dozen surviving nestlings and the oldest fledglings are already flying around the nesting area.
A family of Pied-billed Grebes was discovered on Tuesday in the lake at TY Park, the four young look very cute with their boldly striped heads, orange bills, and rusty napes. They were seen during the week on the east side of the lake but on Saturday they were on the west side. They spend most of their time near the shallow edges of the lake catching mostly crawfish.
